Kenyan and Haitian Police Recapture Port from Gangs

In a significant joint operation, Kenyan and Haitian police forces successfully recaptured the Auorite Portuaire Nationale in Port-au-Prince from gang control. The port, a critical hub for Haiti’s imports and exports, had been under the grip of armed gangs for several months, disrupting the nation’s economy and daily life. The operation, which took place early Thursday morning, marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing struggle to restore order in Haiti.

The joint forces faced heavy resistance from the gangs, who had fortified the port with barricades and makeshift defenses. However, the combined efforts of the Kenyan and Haitian police proved overwhelming. “We coordinated closely to ensure minimal casualties and maximum efficiency,” said General Pierre Joseph, a senior official in the Haitian National Police. “This operation is a testament to the strength and cooperation between our forces.”

Kenyan police officers were deployed to Haiti as part of an international support mission aimed at bolstering local law enforcement amid escalating violence and instability. Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai of Kenya remarked, “Our officers have been working tirelessly alongside their Haitian counterparts. The successful recapture of the port is a significant achievement in our collaborative efforts to restore peace and stability.”

The recapture of the port is expected to have a substantial impact on Haiti’s economy. The port’s closure had led to severe shortages of essential goods and skyrocketing prices, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation in the country. “Reopening the port will help us stabilize the supply chain and bring much-needed relief to our citizens,” noted Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry. “This victory is not just a military success, but a crucial step towards economic recovery.”

Local residents expressed a mix of relief and cautious optimism following the operation. Marie Chantel, a Port-au-Prince shop owner, said, “We have suffered a lot under the gangs. We hope this will bring lasting peace so we can rebuild our lives.” However, many remain wary of the potential for further violence, given the entrenched nature of the gangs in the region.

The international community has praised the joint operation. The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres commended the efforts, stating, “The recapture of the port is a beacon of hope for Haiti. It demonstrates what can be achieved through international cooperation and solidarity.” As the port reopens, the focus now shifts to maintaining security and rebuilding trust within the community. The Kenyan and Haitian police forces continue to work together, aiming to secure not only the port but also the broader area, ensuring that the gains made are not lost.
