President Ruto Orders Basic Firearms Training for NYS Recruits

NAIROBI, Kenya – President William Ruto has announced the inclusion of basic firearms training for National Youth Service (NYS) recruits as part of their standard curriculum. This directive, he says, is aimed at ensuring that the recruits are fully prepared to defend the country whenever the need arises.

Speaking during the NYS passing-out parade in Gilgil, Nakuru County, President Ruto emphasized the importance of equipping the youth with the necessary skills to handle any threats to national security. “The security of our nation is paramount,” President Ruto stated. “We must ensure that our young people are prepared and capable of defending our country when needed. That is why I have ordered the inclusion of basic firearms training in the NYS curriculum.”

The President highlighted the changing nature of security threats in the region, noting that it is crucial for the country to adapt to these new challenges. “Our security environment has changed significantly over the years, and we must remain vigilant. The inclusion of this training will ensure that our NYS recruits are not just ready to serve in non-combat roles but are also prepared to take up arms to defend our nation if required,” he added.

President Ruto also assured Kenyans that the training would be conducted responsibly and under strict supervision to ensure that it aligns with the broader national security strategy. “This training will be done in a controlled environment, with the highest standards of discipline and responsibility. We are not militarizing the youth; rather, we are empowering them to be ready for any eventuality,” he remarked.

In his address, the President also urged the youth to embrace patriotism and to always put the country first. “Your service to this nation is a noble calling,” he told the recruits. “As you take up this training, remember that your ultimate responsibility is to safeguard the peace and stability of Kenya. Let this training be a symbol of your commitment to the nation.”

The directive has been met with mixed reactions, with some praising the move as a necessary step in enhancing national security, while others express concerns about the potential risks of arming young recruits. However, President Ruto was quick to dismiss these concerns, stating that the training is purely defensive in nature and will be part of a comprehensive approach to national service.

“Kenya must be ready for any threat, both internal and external,” President Ruto concluded. “The NYS has always played a crucial role in our national development, and now it will also play a vital role in ensuring the security and sovereignty of our country.”
