Auditor General Nancy Gathungu has flagged Ksh 1.3 billion paid to Nairobi County workers that cannot be traced within the county’s salary accounts.
In her report covering the financial year ending June 2023 Ms Gathungu identified a mismatch between reported staff compensation and the corresponding payments found in the bank statements, revealing an unexplained variance of Ksh 1.39 billion.
The county government attributes this anomaly to payroll issues linked to employees transferred from the defunct Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) but questions remain over the management of these funds and other flagged expenses, including Ksh 161 million in wages to temporary employees without supporting documents and Ksh 1.7 billion in unremitted statutory deductions.
