The World Health Organization has released updated clinical guidelines for managing mpox, now placing stronger emphasis on routine HIV testing for all patients diagnosed with the disease.
These revised recommendations, issued this week, reflect growing evidence that individuals living with HIV—especially those with uncontrolled infections—are at significantly higher risk of severe complications and death from mpox.
“Children, pregnant individuals, and people with weakened immune systems, including those with poorly managed HIV, face greater risks of serious illness and death due to mpox-related complications,” the WHO noted in its updated guidance.
