A section of women leaders – from different political divides – who support Raila Odinga’s presidential bid has launched the Azimo Women Movement.

Raila Odinga’s Azimio La Umoja group, led by ODM leader and presidential candidate Raila Odinga, has created the Azimio Women Movement. The ‘Jeshi la Baba ni akina mama’ program, which was launched on Thursday at a Nairobi hotel, aims to recruit 27.5 million women across the country.

The movement claimed its main focus will be defending the interests of women as it seeks votes for the overall Azimio La Umoja campaign camp, which was attended by officials including Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu and ex-CS and Nyandarua gubernatorial aspirant Sicily Kariuki.“(We) will seek to have the voice of mothers in a village in Nyeri County who is struggling to raise her children as a single mother heard, and the place of a widow in Mandera burdened with the responsibility of feeding her children recognized,” said the female leaders.

They also noted that they shall be championing good healthcare under Odinga’s administration, as well as a social protection program and financial support for women-owned enterprises.”Our women spend hours each day walking hundreds of kilometers in quest of water, time that could be better spent on other family and nation-building tasks.” The answer that a Raila Odinga administration will implement is Maji Kwa Kila Boma with all its accompanying benefits.”

The new movement promised to be Odinga’s scouts in popularizing his presidential bid, hailing him as a “people’s project.””Sisi tutakuwa wanajeshi wa baba mtaani,” they continued, “vijijini na madukani tukieneza sera za muungano wa azimio la umoja, kutafuta, kutoa na kulinda kura za baba, kutafuta, kutoa na kulinda kura The group also urged the government to ensure that not only voters but also female leaders pursuing elective positions are safe during the election season.

“We are requesting that the Inspector General of Police ensure that our female leaders, whether they be governors, senators, women representatives, or members of the county assembly, are safeguarded from political violence and intimidation.”
