Ababu Namwamba has resigned as Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, effective February 10, 2022. On Thursday, he made the news at a press conference in Nairobi. His resignation comes a day after he was appointed to head international affairs duties in Deputy President William Ruto’s presidential campaign secretariat.

“I thank the president for the appointment, but it is time to vacate the seat. We have accomplished so much. During this four-year period, we have had an amazing time,” he saidRuto’s presidential campaigns Director of Communications, Hussein Mohamed, announced Namwmba’s promotion to the deputy president’s team, saying Namwamba, 46, was chosen for the new position because of his diplomatic expertise.

Mohamed said in a statement on Wednesday, February 9 that he was “confident” in Namwamba’s capacity to perform in the new post..“We have worked closely with Ababu over the past ten years on many fronts, and I have come to value his leadership, experience, focus and empathy. It is because of those qualities that I could not be more grateful to have him in our campaign team,” Ruto was quoted as saying.
“I am confident in his role inside my presidential campaign because of his enormous diplomatic talents, profound knowledge of the continent, powerful network on the global arena, and unrelenting commitment,” the deputy president continued.

President Uhuru Kenyatta nominated Namwamba as the Foreign Affairs Ministry’s CAS in January 2018, after he served as a Member of Parliament for Budalangi from 2007 to 2017. In the 2017 elections, he unsuccessfully attempted to defend his position on the Labour Party ticket, losing to ODM candidate Raphael Wanjala.Namwamba is on the record saying he would root for Ruto’s presidential candidature in the upcoming polls.
