Another Top News Anchor Tosses Media Neutrality Aside, Hints Open Support For Azimio

Just days after Deputy President William Ruto accused the media of being biased against his Kenya Kwanza Alliance in favor of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance Coalition party, one of the country’s biggest names in the media seems to be calling his bluff.

Nation Media Group’s top news anchor and podcast boss James Smart gave the clearest indication yet of which side he fancies politically following a brief tweet that appeared to shower admiration on Raila Odinga’s running-mate Martha Karua.

In the tweet, the journalist, who is fondly remembered for being the creator of the runaway successful show The Trend, simply wrote that Martha Karua is the person who has been able to change 2022.

That tweet might have appeared equivocal, as it didn’t wholly declare in which way Karua has changed the year. All the uncertainty was however cleared with Smart’s next tweet where he gave the Narc Kenya party leader glowing reviews. The post said that Karua’s choice was a historic one that gave women a “political summer”. His tweet read,

Odinga picked former Gichugu MP Martha Karua as his running mate in the August 9 polls back in mid-May.
Karua will serve as the Deputy President and Cabinet Secretary in charge of Justice and Constitutional Affairs in the event of an Azimio win.

” The office of the Deputy President is a workshop of the president, therefore the occupant of the office must not be a competitor of the president but a co-worker,” Odinga said.

“That is why the holder of this office must be a woman,” he added.
Raila said his decision was informed by a need to have women included in the male-dominated political arena.
“History is calling us to produce our first female Deputy President,” Odinga explained in detail.

Odinga described Karua as the youngest woman to be MP in Central Kenya, and magistrate to arbitrate issues of men. She described her as a fearless woman who represented him in court during his detention in the Moi era.
