Isaac Juma, Kenya’s most famous football fan, died on Saturday, December 12, 2022, in his Mumias home in Kakamega county. Juma’s burial brought together football enthusiasts from across the country as well as other football stakeholders. In attendance was Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya, who has promised to pay Juma’s children’s school fees and provide other types of assistance to his family.
“I have joined hundreds of football fans drawn from all over the country for the final journey of the renown football fan Isaac Juma at Ebuyenjere village, Mumias West Sub County, Kakamega County. The football fraternity will miss Juma. Rest in peace Juma,” Oparanya posted on his social media platforms. Juma, who was a diehard fan of AFC LEeeeopards and Kakamega Homeboyz in separate periods, was killed in January by unknown people at his Mumias West home.
The 58-year-old was allegedly killed over a family land dispute, according to locals. The land in question had supposedly been sold under the guise of Juma’s death, and things took a nasty turn when he showed up and retrieved it.The family has requested the government to rapidly provide them an other block of property, led by Juma’s eldest daughter Teresa Juma, to save them from the land fight within the extended family.
AFC Leopards, Gor Mahia, Nzoia Sugar, Kakamega, and Sofapaka fans are among those who would attend the funeral ritual. The casket containing the ashes of possibly Kenya’s number one football fan is covered in the Kenyan flag in an emotional event, a stark reminder of the patriotism he shown throughout his life, always gyrating to imaginary tunes with the flag in tow, during football matches
