Covid-19: Unique Covid-19 Variant Detected in Kenya by Researchers

Researchers recently discovered a Coronavirus variant within the East African Nations that is unique from all others in the world. According to the Daily Nation News Paper, the reports cite a Kenyan researcher from the Kenya Medical Research Institute, Charles Agoti.
The variant was traced in Taita Taveta County’s southern part and is currently spreading across the Nation. However, studies are still underway to know whether it is easily spread or can cause adverse illness to its victims.

There have been about 500 genomes sequenced by different scientists around the globe since the pandemic started. Most of these genomes were collected after the second wave of covid-19 as reported by the Daily Nation.
Researchers are also yet to know if the discovery will alter the advancements in finding a reliable solution to the pandemic. Since December 28th, 2020, there have been 95992 covid-19 confirmed cases in Kenya, 77521 patient recoveries and 1664 related deaths. Even so, the mandatory covid-19 restrictions are still on with wearing of masks while in public remains in effect.
