Deputy President William Ruto is set to hold a campaign rally in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s rural home

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s rural home village of Ichaweri will host a campaign event by Deputy President William Ruto, kicking off a new chapter in the catastrophic breakdown between the two former political soulmates. Since their political breakup in early 2019, DP Ruto has hosted multiple campaign meetings in President Kenyatta’s Kiambu County backyard, but he has wisely avoided the Gatundu South constituency, which the Head of State once represented as a Member of Parliament.

The country’s second-in-command, on the other hand, is set to begin his March 18 visit to Gatundu South with a rally in Ng’enda Ward, where his boss normally votes, before going on to Kimunyu, Mutomo, Kiamwangi, Mundoro, and Kiamwangi. “In Gatundu South, we’ll make five stops. Ruto last visited Gatundu South three years ago, according to Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah. United Democratic Alliance (UDA) hopefuls and elected leaders will host the DP. His campaign plan includes a trip to the President’s hometown, ward, and rallies at a location where the First Family is involved in a property dispute with villagers over the development of a university named after the President’s mother.
More than 160 Mutomo landowners have spoken out against the forcible seizure of their land to allow Mama Ngina University to expand. Dr. Ruto has previously held rallies in Gatundu North, where he avoided explicitly criticising the President, instead deferring to his close allies. Mr Ichung’wah said yesterday that the Gatundu South rally on Friday will be a UDA rally with Kenya Kwanza partners Musalia Mudavadi of the Amani National Congress and Moses Wetang’ula of Ford Kenya.
