After hours of questioning, Deputy President William Ruto emerged as the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) presidential candidate. On Saturday, DP Ruto and two other hopefuls, Tracy Wanjiru and Orina Jephanei, were summoned to the Hustlers Plaza in Nairobi for screening by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC). After the interviews, UDA Deputy Chair Kipruto Arap Kirwa told the press that DP Ruto was the only candidate who matched the eligibility criterion and that the National Delegates Congress (NDC) on March 15, 2022, would be the next stage.

“We’ve reached the end of our nominations process for a UDA presidential candidate, and the NEC board will propose DP William Ruto to the NDC on Tuesday,” Kirwa stated. Tracy and Orina did not qualify, according to him, because they did not match certain required requirements for the two-step process of document verification and interviews. “Tracy did not qualify since she does not have a degree,” he added, referring to the young lady who has yet to complete her education. “Orina will be unable to continue beyond today due to his failure to meet the conditions since he was unable to raise the Ksh. 1 million minimum fee.”
Wanjiru, a third-year JKUAT student, expressed gratitude to the party for allowing her to run for the high-profile position, even as she remained optimistic that she would defeat the DP on the basis of ideas. “As a woman and a member of a minority group, I am grateful to the party’s leadership for this opportunity. Despite the fact that I have not completed my study at the institution, I am grateful that they have enabled me to participate in the process “she stated “The fact that the top seat is usually reserved is practically unspoken, yet this party has an extraordinary level of democracy and inclusivity. In terms of ideas, I believe I could surpass William Ruto, but not in terms of education.”
