DP Ruto’s presidential campaign meets DRC Head of Mission in Nairobi after retracting harsh remarks on milk production.

On Thursday, Deputy President William Ruto’s presidential campaign team met with Malenga Omoy Charlotte, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s ambassador to Kenya, in an attempt to heal relations. Their encounter came after Ruto made comments that seemed to imply that the Democratic Republic of Congo lacked a cow. The remark sparked outrage on the internet.

The media director for the Democratic Party’s presidential campaign, Hussein Mohamed, stated in a tweet that the DRC Head of Mission had promised them that bilateral relations between the two nations will stay intact, together with the Head of International Relations, Ababu Namwamba. “DRC Head of Missions Madam Malenga Omoy Charlotte has assured that our bilateral relations remain intact and what takes precedence is the existing formal diplomatic channels of communication,” Hussein said. “We both agree that cordial sister countries always leave room for engagement through formal diplomatic channels in the face of any issues.”

Senator Francine Muyumba Nkanga of Congo took to Twitter shortly after Ruto’s speech to express her disgust with the DP. She called his comments undiplomatic and demanded an apology. Ruto apologized and expressed sorry for the misunderstanding caused by his statements. “I apologize for any misunderstanding that may have developed as a result of my speech, and I take this opportunity to express my deep admiration and respect for the government and people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo,” he said.
