Several criminal charges have been leveled against the former governor, including corruption, violence, and terrorism-related offenses. The colorful former governor of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, is now facing a slew of criminal allegations, including multiple corruption cases, assault, and terrorist-related offenses. He refutes all of them. He is accused of embezzling more than 300 million shillings, allegedly through the unlawful granting of contracts to friends’ businesses, which are reported to have wired money to his personal accounts after receiving payments from Nairobi county.
Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has become a life member of the Wiper Democratic Movement. Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka greeted him at the party’s headquarters, where he was joined by other Wiper leaders such as chairperson Chirau Ali Mwakwere, secretary-general Shakila Mohammed, Kitui Senator Enock Wambua, and Embakasi South MP Julius Mawathe. Sonko, who has been absent from the political landscape since his removal as Nairobi governor, resigned from the Jubilee party last month.
Mr. Sonko thanked Jubilee for assisting him prior to his impeachment in a letter to the party, even though he maintained that his removal from office was unlawful. “I’d want to express my gratitude to the party leadership for their support throughout my time as Governor of Nairobi City County before being illegally removed from office, and I hope that they can assist change this country for the better.” In part, the resignation letter read, “I wish the party and the esteemed members all the best in the future.”
