Raila Odinga, the head of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), brought his campaign to Machakos county on Saturday, urging Kenyans to support his presidential ambition. He chastised Deputy President William Ruto for criticizing the government he works with. “During his journey to the United States, he is presenting President Kenyatta as a thief, but we know who the real thief is,” Mr. Odinga said. “You voted for us in 2013 and 2017, and we implore you to do so again in 2017.” The Azimio la Umoja political grouping is bringing Kenyans together. Here, there is no discrimination.”
Many people took the ODM chief’s message to be directed at Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka. Mr. Musyoka is largely regarded as the political kingpin of the Lower Eastern region. He had previously shown interest in cooperating with Mr. Odinga ahead of the August 9 General Election but afterward changed his mind. Mr. Odinga, according to the Wiper Party’s leader, has betrayed him by collaborating with governors Alfred Mutua (Machakos), Charity Ngilu (Kitui), and Makueni’s Kivutha Kibwana to undermine him.
The three-county leaders, on the other hand, believe Mr. Musyoka is taking too long to decide on the August polls. They’ve even told Mr. Odinga that he doesn’t need Mr. Musyoka to secure his support in the region, which has 1.6 million registered voters, according to reports. Dr. Mutua took a shot at Mr. Odinga’s former backers who failed to show up for his mock swearing-in following the contentious 2017 presidential election. “Making decisions is what leadership is all about.” You can’t move forward without making choices. “We’ve already joined Azimio La Umoja and started campaigning,” stated the Maendeleo Chap Chap party’s leader.
