IEBC summons Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria over utterances made during UDA Party NDC at Kasarani, Nairobi

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has summoned Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria for claiming that they helped President Uhuru Kenyatta steal votes in the previous election. In both the 2013 and 2017 general elections, Uhuru’s win was disputed by his primary rival, ODM leader Raila Odinga. The Supreme Court threw out the results of the subsequent election. Kuria said on March 15 that he and other political figures helped Uhuru win both elections through fraudulent means.

“Kuna wengine wanasema ati kura ya mlima itagawanywa; mheshimiwa Ann Waiguru, Rigathi Gachagua, Muthomi Njuki, Kimani Ichung’wa, Senator Linturi, Alice Wahome, Faith Gitau, Kimani wa Matangi…Sisi ndio tulikuwa tukishikilia Uhuru kura, na sisi ndio tulikuwa tunamuibia kura,” Kuria said. This is what it means: “Some predict that the Mt Kenya vote will be split. We are the individuals who guarded Uhuru’s votes and stole the election. Hon Ann Waiguru, Rigathi Gachagua, Muthomi Njuki, Kimani Ichung’wa, Senator Linturi, Alice Wahome, Faith Gitau, Kimani wa Matangi…we are the people who guarded Uhuru’s votes and stole the election.”
Kuria was summoned before the IEBC’s Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee on March 30, according to a statement released on Saturday by IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati, who also serves as the commission’s Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee secretary. “A report and material against you have been seized by the commission in relation to alleged violations of Clauses 6(a) and 6(i) of the Electoral Code of Conduct.” “You are hereby obliged to attend the commission’s offices at Anniversary Towers, Commission Boardroom 6th Floor on Wednesday, March 30, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.,” Chebukati added. Kuria made the charges on March 15 in the Kasarani Gymnasium Arena during the United Democratic Alliance party delegates convention.
