Manchester United was held at home by relegation-threatened Watford, dropping two more points in their pursuit for a Champions League spot. Despite dominating at Old Trafford, the Red Devils were booed as they departed the field after the goalless stalemate. United had 22 efforts on goal against Roy Hodgson’s side, but Cristiano Ronaldo was offside the only time they scored. Ronaldo also smacked a post and a goal-bound shot at teammate Anthony Elanga.
Elanga was also unable to complete a flowing play, while Bruno Fernandes was unable to take advantage of two wonderful first-half chances. Watford could have equalized, but Emmanuel Dennis’ shot lacked conviction and struck Raphael Varane before rebounding back to David de Gea. A win for the visitors would have gone completely against the grain, but a point moves them closer to the clubs just outside the relegation zone.
Both teams stood behind a banner declaring ‘Peace’ in a variety of different languages, including Russian and Ukrainian, as a gesture of support with Ukraine following the Russian invasion. For United, it was yet another one of those disappointing games about which interim manager Rangnick has been vocal throughout his brief stint. The hosts provided a slew of opportunities, but they all went begging. When Ronaldo stuck a post, he was the first to be blamed. Fernandes, on the other hand, was the worst
