David De Gea has received the EA SPORTS Player of the Month title for January 2022. The Spaniard is the first goalkeeper to win the monthly award since Southampton’s Fraser Forster in February 2016. De Gea made a total of 22 saves in Manchester United’s four January games, including five in a 1-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers, seven in a 2-2 tie with Aston Villa, and eight in a 3-1 victory against Brentford.
In a critical 1-0 win over top-four rivals West Ham United, he also kept a clean sheet. This season, De Gea has made the most saves in the Premier League. His 84 points are 13 more than his nearest rival, Illan Meslier. After 361 Premier League appearances and 127 clean sheets, the 31-year-old is the first player to win the Player of the Month honor. Jarrod Bowen, Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Harrison, Joao Moutinho, and James Ward-Prowse were among a six-man January shortlist.
He played a crucial role as Man Utd ended January with back-to-back wins in the Premier League. The Spaniard made eight saves in a 3-1 win at Brentford, before keeping his only clean sheet of the month in a last-gasp 1-0 victory at home to West Ham. United have managed to break back into the top four and that is partly down to the strong performances of De Gea, who has once again been their saviour this season.
A fast start to the 2021/22 campaign came crashing to a halt during a tough autumnal stretch for the Red Devils, with De Gea, who was dropped towards the end of last season, coming to United’s rescue time after time. Despite his heroics in a United shirt in the last decade, this is actually the first time that De Gea has won the Premier League’s Player of the Month award.
