Meru Senator Mithika Linturi has officially declared that he will contest the Meru governor’s seat

Senator Mithika Linturi of Meru has indicated that he will compete in the August 9 general election to unseat Governor Kiraitu Murungi. Linturi’s quest to unseat Murungi and become the county’s third leader comes after numerous MPs, including Kathuri Murungi (South Imenti), Mugambi Rindikiri (Buuri), Kubai Kiringo (Igembe Central), John Mutunga (Tigania West), and Josphat Gichunge (Tigania East), pledged their support.

Linturi made the announcement in a tense situation at Maili Tatu stadium on Sunday during the finals of a volleyball event sponsored by Kiringo. Linturi is the finest candidate for the job, according to the majority of speakers, who are allies of Deputy President William Ruto’s hustler movement. According to them, it was the Igembe subtribe’s turn to hold the governorship. Kiraitu belongs to the Imenti subtribe, which is the largest, whereas his predecessor, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya, belongs to the Tigania subtribe, which is the smallest.
Linturi’s announcement came in the aftermath of DP Ruto’s recent visits to Meru, in which he and his associates had appealed with Kiraitu, the head of the Devolution Empowerment Party, to join UDA. Ruto, who is set to visit Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties this weekend after returning from his trip to the United States, had issued warnings when he visited Meru, urging Kiraitu to join his camp because the UDA had widespread support in the county. “But, because I am from Igembe, I am not running. It’s because I’m working on a program that will help Meru develop. I’d like to see devolution strengthened “Linturi explained.
