According to the United Nations, the number of refugees fleeing across Ukraine’s borders has reached a critical nadir, as Russia’s siege of key cities across the country continued into Thursday, with Moscow claiming control of a city in southern Ukraine. Since Russian forces entered Ukraine a week ago, 1 million people have fled over the country’s borders, according to the United Nations’ top refugee official. “We have witnessed the migration of one million refugees from Ukraine to neighboring countries in just seven days,” said the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
The increased number of Ukrainian refugees represents a little more than 2% of the country’s 44 million population. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), almost half of the refugees are in Poland, with Hungary, Moldova, and Slovakia rounding out the top five, while some have gone to other European countries. “For many millions more inside Ukraine, it’s time for weapons to fall silent, so that life-saving humanitarian help may be supplied,” Grandi wrote in his tweet.
