ODM leader Raila Odinga welcomes Supreme Court ruling on BBI

Raila Odinga, the head of the Orange Democratic Party (ODM), has praised the Supreme Court’s decision on the Building Bridges Initiative, saying it upholds Kenyan people’s sovereignty. Raila said in a statement on Thursday that the ruling confirms that state organs must submit to the decision of the people and must never usurp their sovereignty. “I support the decision, particularly in light of the ongoing debate over constitutional revisions,” Raila remarked.

The ODM leader, on the other hand, pointed out that the Supreme Court upheld all of the initiative’s terms except for the section where the state was chastised for taking part in a citizen-centered process. “I am pleased to see that the BBI procedure has been upheld. The role that the state is reported to have had at the start of the popular effort has been criticized. With the exception of justices Njoki Ndung’u and Isaac Lenaola, all seven Supreme Court judges ruled that the president cannot initiate a popular initiative.
The court ruled that President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Kenyatta, not the people, were the ones who started the constitutional amendment process. On the basis of the things affirmed by the court, including the formation of 70 additional constituencies, the ODM leader believes there is still opportunity for a constitutional amendment process to take place. Raila said, “We will think on the way forward and decide on a future course of action that preserves the interests of all those who voted to see the revisions come to light.”
