Presidential aspirant Raila Odinga promises to take Harambee Stars to AFCON if elected president by improving the sport from grassroot level

Raila Odinga, the leader of the ODM party, has pledged that if he is elected president on August 9, the Harambee Stars will compete in the Africa Cup of Nations. Raila was saying after Sadio Mane scored the game-winning penalty kick as Senegal won the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time, defeating Egypt 4-2 in a penalty shootout in Yaounde on Sunday, following a 0-0 tie in the final.

“Senegal, congratulations on your victory. I assure Kenyan soccer fans that under my leadership, Harambee stars would compete in the next Afcon “Raila expressed her thoughts. On Sunday evening, via his Twitter handle, Raila said if he is elected president, his government will invest in football.”We’ll invest in football starting with grassroots/mtaani and community clubs,” he said. Harambee Star’s grand return to Afcon after a 16-year hiatus was overshadowed by allegations of gross mismanagement of finances allotted by the government towards the entire campaign.

Kenya’s bid to compete in Cameroon was thwarted after a tumultuous qualifying campaign in which they finished third behind eventual champions Egypt and Comoros with uneven results. Harambee Stars have only won one match thus far, with four draws and a loss in the others. On November 11, they were held to a one-all draw by Comoros Islands in Nairobi before losing 2-1 in Moroni a few days later.
During the February 6,2022 match, Mane had missed an early penalty but stepped up to make history for the West African nation, and banish the memories of their 2019 failure when they lost in the finals to Algeria. In the shootout, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy saved a penalty kick from Mohanad Lasheen, allowing Mane to seal the victory and provide appropriate compensation for Senegal, who had been by far the stronger team in the final but had missed multiple opportunities to win the game. Egypt’s goalkeeper Mohamed Abo Gabal was superb in holding Senegal at bay at the Stade d’Olembe, although it was the fourth time in as many games that they had played extra time in energy-sapping circumstances.
