Two journalists were beaten by security agents at the ODM headquarters yesterday during a celebration attended by party leader Raila Odinga. At Chungwa House, Mr. Moses Nyamori of The Standard and Mr Luke Awich of The Star were beaten up. The event sparked outrage among media stakeholders, who asked that the perpetrators be prosecuted. The two journalists were met by a security squad led by ODM security chief Bernard Kadundo, who requested that they leave.
Despite the fact that the two identified themselves as journalists, the security crew demanded that they leave. Mr. Nyamori was then frog-matched out of the site by two security agents who roughed him up. In the subsequent brawl, they tore his garments to shreds. Later, several party leaders intervened, but the situation escalated when security personnel accosted the journalists again and broke Mr Awich’s phone.
After the occasion, one of them threatened to assault the two journalists, causing Mr Nyamori to take refuge in the car of ODM chair John Mbadi. Later, the party apologized and promised to act through its Secretary for Political Affairs, Opiyo Wandayi. “As a party, we apologize profoundly, and we must elevate the situation through our internal channels,” Mr Wandayi added. The Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) and the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) both denounced the attack and requested that the perpetrators be punished.
