Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich puts Chelsea Football Club on sale

According to reports, Roman Abramovich has encouraged possible suitors to make bids for Chelsea after putting the club up for sale this week. The 55-year-old has come under fire at Stamford Bridge and was due to receive proposals for the club this week, with speculation that a sale might be on the cards. At least three parties are interested in the club, including Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss.

The Telegraph reports that Abramovich has put the club up for sale, with an American-based merchant bank claiming to be in charge of the sale contacting possible purchasers after the club refuted allegations that he wanted to sell the club. Chelsea has not replied to reports that the club is for sale, despite Abramovich’s desire to sell for £4 billion. According to the Telegraph, insiders close to the process believe that only bids of roughly £2 billion would be submitted. He is currently owed £1.5 billion by Chelsea.
It comes after Abramovich expressed a desire to hand over the club’s’stewardship and care’ to the trustees of the nonprofit foundation, citing pressure from the UK government over potential sanctions. However, due to concerns, the trustees have yet to consent to a contract. The discussions are still ongoing. Billionaire Hansjörg Wyss reaffirmed his interest and the club’s position in an interview with Swiss publication Blick on Tuesday evening. “Abramovich is attempting to sell all of his English properties,” Wyss said. “He also wants to get rid of Chelsea as soon as possible.” On Tuesday, Abramovich made me and three other people an offer to buy Chelsea.
