For many people, virginity has always been a mark of respect and pride for a woman across the world. However, there is a tribe that does not share the same sentiments because to them, for a woman to remain a virgin even during her wedding invites bad luck to where she will live.
The Gelao tribe from the Guizhou Province in China regards virginity as a taboo for a lady before she is married. They believe that for a lady to get married as a virgin, the family or husband is likely to experience bad luck throughout her marriage life. This is a tradition that makes the tribe special even though many others hold a contrary opinion.
As a result, for men to know that the girl they are after is still a virgin, the lady knocks off two of her front teeth. Once the marriage ceremony is done, the bride’s family escorts her to her groom’s closet with an umbrella.
Immediately she is in the house, she pours water on the heads of every member of her family. It is believed this act will chase away any bad luck trailing her to the new family and invite good luck henceforth.
