The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) presided over students’ council elections at Moi Kapsowar Girls High School in Elgeyo Marakwet.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has launched a programme to step help young Kenyans understand electoral processes.

The IEBC has taken voter education to schools as part of an ongoing programme since young Kenyans are frequently exposed to political discourse and events from a variety of politicians, which can be confusing. This is one of the commission’s responsibilities, as it is in charge of not just overseeing the country’s elections but also civic education.
“It is part of our corporate social responsibility to help students’ councils’ elections,” said Marakwet West IEBC Registration Officer Daniel Cheptot.According to Cheptop, the team is assisting children in understanding their vital civic rights by providing information on voting procedures and election processes so that they can grow up to be responsible citizens.
The school’s principal Hellen Mabese Luhangala, who invited IEBC, said students’ councils are vital in all learning institutions, whether in primary, secondary or tertiary institutions. “Their establishment gives students an opportunity to acquire communication, planning and organizational skills which will be of benefit to them in their future lives,” she said.
Students who were seeking leadership positions were allowed to campaign with emphasis on policies rather than personal confrontations hinged on tribal, social and religious statuses. Luhangala reiterated that by campaigning, students learn and apply great communication skills, organize their agendas and plan on executing them.

She challenged learning institutions to facilitate students’ councils’ elections and allow them to engage in healthy debates as part of their wholesome training. Student leaders who clinched different positions and those who lost were urged to embrace courage, integrity, honesty, loyalty and compassion.
