The U.S. will deliver at least 15 billion cubic meters of LNG to Europe in 2022

According to Reuters, President Joe Biden promised that the US would export at least 15 billion cubic metres (bcm) more liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe this year than previously scheduled. According to one of the sources, the agreement will be revealed on Friday and would involve increased US LNG supplies to the European Union in 2023.

Germany’s plans, as detailed by its vice-chancellor, represent a dramatic 180-degree shift for Europe’s greatest economy, which has traditionally relied heavily on Russian energy. Germany was still aiming to import more natural gas from Moscow through a new pipeline called Nord Stream 2 just a few months ago. In under a month, however, President Vladimir V. Putin’s invasion of Ukraine has pushed German and other European leaders to throw up the energy playbook they had been using for years, if not decades. At a briefing in Berlin, German Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck said his country was moving away from Russian energy at a “crazy pace.”
President Biden is attempting to persuade other European countries to take similar steps, in part by offering the United States as a source of energy. He announced a pact in Brussels early on Friday that lacked many details but addressed key major objectives: This year, the US will ship an additional 15 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas to Europe, accounting for about 10% to 12% of total US exports to all countries. According to the president, the US will try to enhance supplies by up to 50 billion cubic meters per year by 2030.
