Top KCSE student arrested in DRC on suspicion of terrorism

Authorities in DR Congo have arrested Salim Rashid Mohamed alias Chotara who scored an A- (minus) in the 2014 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

Chotara was detained on suspicion of being a member of the infamous Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an Islamist rebel group operating in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Chotara, a key commander in the ADF and a member of Kenya’s most wanted list in 2021, is from Mombasa County.

Mohamed is said to have been extremist and extreme when he was a teenager, but his hunger for Jihad became insatiable after he moved to Turkey to complete his education.Mohamed was jailed for being a senior member of a youth network that radicalizes adolescents in Masjid Musa Mosque in Majengo shortly after being deported from Turkey in 2017, but was released on a 1.5 million bond only to depart the country in 2020.

After securing temporary unauthorized trucking jobs, a group of Kenyan teenagers from the Masjid Musa Mosque were last spotted in the DRC cities of Goma and Butembo. Mohamed enlisted the help of the kids and organized their travel to the DRC by finding them temporary jobs as ‘turn-boys for trucks’ bound for the continent’s second-largest country.

Freight Forwarding companies owned by some Yemeni businessmen are often exploited during these terrorist operations. They spend a night or two in Goma at certain Mosques before being picked up by IS-Central Africa Province (ISCAP) logisticians and transferred to terrorist training camps in Beni, Kivu prefecture.

Mohamed has reportedly been taught in the assembly and detonation of improvised explosive devices (IEDs). ADF has claimed responsibility for a series of bombs in Uganda in October and November 2021, as well as a Christmas Day explosion in a restaurant in Beni, Congo.
