Moi University Staff Protest, Demand Resignation of Vice Chancellor and Council Dissolution

Eldoret, Kenya – Moi University has been engulfed in turmoil as staff members staged a protest on campus grounds, calling for the immediate resignation of Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Sanga Kosgey and the complete dissolution of the university council. The demonstration, held on Tuesday, was marked by passionate speeches and slogans from the disgruntled staff.

The protesters, comprising academic and non-academic staff, expressed their frustration over what they termed as “gross mismanagement” and “lack of accountability” by the university’s top leadership. Carrying placards and chanting slogans, the staff members marched through the university grounds, demanding swift action to address their grievances.

“Prof. Kosgey has failed us. His tenure has been marked by inefficiency, corruption, and a blatant disregard for the welfare of the staff and students,” stated Dr. Mary Kiplagat, a senior lecturer at the School of Arts and Social Sciences. “We have no choice but to call for his resignation and the dissolution of the university council to pave the way for a new, transparent leadership.”

Among the key issues raised by the protesting staff were delayed salaries, lack of essential teaching materials, and deteriorating infrastructure. “It is unacceptable that we have to work under such deplorable conditions. The university management has neglected its responsibilities, and this has severely impacted our ability to deliver quality education,” said John Mwangi, a laboratory technician.

The staff members also accused the university council of failing in its oversight role. “The council has turned a blind eye to the numerous issues plaguing the university. They have not held the Vice Chancellor accountable, and this has exacerbated the problems we are facing,” added Dr. Kiplagat.

In a press statement issued during the protest, the staff outlined their demands, including the immediate payment of all outstanding salaries, improvement of working conditions, and a thorough audit of the university’s finances. They also called for an independent committee to oversee the transition to new leadership.

“The time for change is now. We will not relent until our demands are met,” declared Mwangi. “We owe it to ourselves and to the students to ensure that Moi University is restored to its former glory.”

As the protest continued, the university’s administration remained silent on the matter. Efforts to reach Vice Chancellor Prof. Kosgey and members of the university council for comment were unsuccessful. The staff members have vowed to continue with their demonstrations until their demands are addressed.

The unfolding situation at Moi University highlights the growing discontent within Kenya’s higher education sector, where issues of governance and resource allocation continue to be major concerns. The staff’s call for decisive action underscores the urgency of addressing these challenges to ensure the stability and progress of the institution.
