Eric Omondi appeared before a Nairobi court on 8 June 2026 after being charged with obstructing traffic along Kimathi Street in Nairobi. The charge stems from a protest held in May 2026, during which he allegedly offloaded 120 empty plastic jerricans onto the road, causing disruption to the normal flow of vehicles. According to the prosecution, the act amounted to obstruction of motorists contrary to the Kenya Roads Act.

During the court proceedings, Omondi denied the charge and pleaded not guilty. His legal team argued that the demonstration was intended to highlight the struggles faced by ordinary Kenyans, particularly concerning the high cost of living and challenges related to access to essential services. They maintained that the jerricans were symbolic of the hardships many citizens endure and were not meant to create public disorder.

The court released Omondi on a personal bond of KSh 100,000 pending further hearings. The case has attracted significant public attention because Omondi has become one of Kenya’s most outspoken activists, frequently organizing demonstrations on issues affecting ordinary citizens. Supporters view his actions as a form of civic activism, while authorities argue that public protests must be conducted within the law to avoid disrupting public order.

This case highlights the ongoing debate between the constitutional right to protest and the responsibility to ensure that public activities do not interfere with the rights of others. As the matter proceeds through the courts, many Kenyans will be watching closely to see how the law balances freedom of expression with public safety and order
