Teachers at Litein Boys High Demand Transfers After Student Riot

Teachers at Litein Boys High School in Kericho say they won’t go back to work because they fear for their safety. This comes after a violent student riot on September 21, where property worth millions of shillings was destroyed. The students were reportedly angry after they weren’t allowed to watch an English Premier League match between Arsenal and Manchester City.

Speaking through their union, KUPPET, the teachers said they’ve faced threats and intimidation since the chaos. They now want the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to transfer all staff from the school immediately.

Mary Rotich, KUPPET’s Kericho branch leader, said the teachers are being unfairly blamed. She also criticized the school’s decision to charge each parent Ksh49,000 to cover the damages, saying it has made things worse for the teachers.

The teachers insist they will not return until their safety is guaranteed.
