Rwanda Set to Bring Formula 1 Racing Back to Africa After More Than Three Decades
Rwanda is making a bold move onto the global sporting stage after securing a 10-year deal to host the Formula 1 African Grand Prix, potentially bringing the world’s premier motorsport competition back to Africa for the first time since 1993.
The planned races are expected to begin in the early 2030s at a new racing circuit in Bugesera, approximately 40 kilometres south of Rwanda’s capital, Kigali. Formula 1 has already unveiled a proposed design of the circuit, offering fans a glimpse of what could become one of Africa’s most exciting motorsport destinations.
The announcement marks a significant milestone for Rwanda, which has increasingly positioned itself as a destination for major international sporting events. Hosting Formula 1 could attract thousands of international visitors, boost tourism, create employment opportunities and generate revenue for local businesses.
For African motorsport enthusiasts, the prospect of a Grand Prix on the continent is particularly exciting. Africa has been absent from the Formula 1 calendar since the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami.
However, the ambitious project will require substantial investment in infrastructure, transport, accommodation and circuit development before racing can begin.
If successfully delivered, Rwanda’s Grand Prix could open a new chapter in African motorsport history, giving the continent a renewed place on Formula 1’s global calendar.
